Arizonans know that back to normal isn’t good enough, and the
forthcoming COVID-19 recovery is an incredible
opportunity to reshape our economy to be equitable
and fair for every single one of us.
For 30 years, lawmakers have cut Arizona’s public services to the bone, with total disregard to the impact on black, brown, indigenous, and working class communities. They’ve given tax breaks to the wealthy and well-connected while slashing spending on education, health, and housing assistance, legislating a system of blatant neglect for anyone without money or power. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated existing and systemic wounds in our communities that will take real investment, long-term attention and care to heal. Even amidst a “normal” economy over the years, lawmakers deprived Arizonans of more than $5 billion, and we can’t afford to go back to a normal that never worked for us.
